Chelsey, founder of Ataraxy, outdoors under a blue sky

About

Made slowly,
by hand,
in California.

Ataraxy is the work of Chelsey Croucher.

The beginning

It started on a summer trip to Naxos, Greece. Among the ancient olive trees outside Chalkio, I washed each morning with simple soaps made from little more than olive oil. Nothing hurried, nothing excess, and for the first time in a long time I felt unburdened.

I came home with a word I couldn’t stop thinking about: ataraxia, the Greek idea of a mind at rest. Back in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, I began making soap the slow way, by hand, in small batches, and shaping each one into a sphere.

“True luxury isn’t excess. It’s the rare comfort of being unburdened.”

Back in Los Angeles

Now I’m back in Los Angeles, bringing home the scents that nature and solitude shaped. Every sphere is still formed by steady hands, one small batch at a time, from a palm-free blend of plant oils, colored only with clays, botanicals and charcoal, and cured for several weeks. Each one is an invitation to let your ritual linger a little longer, simply for the pleasure of it.
